Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has appointed Adrian Hamilton-Manns as its chief executive officer, the airline’s board announced on Monday, Dawn and The Express Tribune reported.
Hamilton-Manns has formally taken charge, replacing Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Amir Hayat, who led the airline for four and a half years.
Who he is
In a statement on X, PIA said Hamilton-Manns “brings a wealth of leadership and strategic experience within the global aviation sector” and that his appointment “marks a pivotal chapter” in the airline’s transformation. It said he has managed three airlines as CEO, has more than 30 years of experience and is considered a “world expert” in restructuring and reviving airlines.
According to Forbes Middle East, cited by Dawn, he was previously CEO of Oman’s SalamAir and of Kazakhstan-based FlyArystan, and has held roles at South African Airways and Virgin Australia.
The outgoing CEO
The PIA consortium and board thanked Hayat for his “outstanding service and dedication”. The airline credited him with:
- steering PIA through “significant industry challenges”
- starting structural reforms and improving operations
- overseeing improvements in aviation safety standards
- helping secure the lifting of restrictions on PIA flights to Europe and the United Kingdom
- preparing the airline for privatisation
Privatised in December, run by a consortium since June
The national flag carrier was privatised through an auction in December last year. A consortium led by Arif Habib Corporation won 75 per cent of PIA’s shares with a Rs135 billion bid, beating a consortium led by Muhammad Ali Tabba, according to Dawn and the Tribune. The consortium took charge in June and promised to turn around the loss-making airline through restructuring, fleet expansion and better customer service. The Tribune lists the consortium’s members as Arif Habib, Fawad Ahmed Mukhtar, Gohar Ejaz and Aqeel Karim Dhedhi.
A fleet in transition
The appointment came a day after PIA’s first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, acquired on lease last month, arrived in Islamabad from London as flight PK786. A PIA spokesperson said PIA is the first Pakistani airline to add a Boeing 787-9 to its fleet. Our earlier reports describe how the first Dreamliner landed in Islamabad and how new cabin crew uniforms were designed for the Dreamliner.
What we know, and what we don’t
- Known: Hamilton-Manns is CEO, and the board and consortium back him.
- Known: the airline says he specialises in airline turnarounds.
- Unknown: the terms of his contract, and his priorities, which the statement describes only in general terms.
- Unknown: why Hayat is leaving, beyond the board’s thanks for his service.
Why it matters
PIA is described as loss-making, and its new owners have promised restructuring, fleet expansion and better service. A new chief executive who has run other airlines gives the owners a person to carry out that plan. For passengers, the visible signs will be on-time performance, the new Dreamliner on the London route and customer service. For the owners, the real test is whether the airline turns a profit.
